Throughout this blog, you’ll see the phrase Father First used frequently.

The idea here is that we can’t all be stay-at-home dads, but we can (and should) make our decisions for the day, and for our lives, according to our roles as dads.

For me, on a daily level, that might mean planning to take lunch with the kids even though the schedule is busy, or reading an extra book and using a different voice for every character. Just being really present.

As for my life choices, it meant choosing a job with purpose, that has a direct connection to my kids’ heritage and to their future sense of identity, so I can muster the energy to defy my instinct and leave them every day when all I really want to do is stay, play, teach, be.

Hopefully the Father First ideas you find here will be helpful in your day-to-day role as a papa and, maybe, play a part in those really big decisions when they roll around.

P.S. The term does not imply that father comes first, above all others. It means, I am a father, first.
